Wyoming has applied for federal funds to transform its healthcare system by boosting rural hospital emergency services, expanding telehealth, and offering workforce scholarships—aiming to support basic care access and financial protection plans like BearCare for patients.
The proposal, based on public input from town halls and surveys, seeks to extend benefits well beyond usual funding periods.
Wyoming Women’s Action Network’s white paper found that maternal care is in crisis after four hospitals closed their labor wards since 2022, leaving just 16 birthing hospitals to serve 97,000 square miles.
Staff shortages and high costs worsen care (Wyoming remains the only state not joining a national initiative to improve maternity outcomes) and lawmakers have already discussed short-term fixes.
