CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockpile Museum's traveling exhibition 'The Unquiet Utes' is now on display at the Wyoming State Capitol. The exhibit uses historic photographs to show the journey of Absentee Utes who protested U.S. government land policy and met Buffalo Soldiers north of Gillette — a key part of our shared history.  Campbell County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State Forester Kelly Norris reported at a recent meeting that 1,317 wildfires burned about 253,000 acres in 2025 and that suppression costs are tracking at about $21M. Most fires occurred on state and private lands— the largest being the Red Canyon Fire in Hot Springs County.  County 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since the government shutdown began at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1, the Wyoming State Budget Department said the state will cover short-term federal funding gaps for affected employees under Gov. Mark Gordon’s protocols. The state health department also said it can maintain services for a few weeks while monitoring cash balances and federal drawdowns.  Wyoming Public Media
  • Utility work is scheduled to begin this week at Highway 59 and Madison Street, and officials say it will close the eastbound lane on Madison east of Highway 59, the eastbound through lane on Madison west of the highway, and the left-turn lane on southbound Highway 59 for about two weeks. Drivers should plan extra travel time + use detours on EZ Street and Country Club Road to access nearby businesses.  County 17
  • State lawmakers reviewed the Wyoming Health Department budget during a six-hour meeting on Sept. 30—where they examined funding priorities and cost-cutting measures. They will meet on Oct. 14 to study past cuts further and plan adjustments amid concerns about unsustainable spending.  Wyoming Public Media
  • The Wyoming Highway Patrol warns that colder, windier weather and snow are coming—drivers are urged to use the 511 app and stock extra supplies in their vehicles. Chris Stewart said drivers should plan ahead and remain with their vehicles if road conditions worsen.  Wyoming News Now

  • Friday saw Gillette Oktoberfest kick off at 5 p.m. along Gillette Avenue with music, dancing, food and beer—and today the event continues at 3 p.m. in downtown with more festivities.  Gillette News Record
