COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Club of Campbell County is fundraising to replace its aging walk-in cooler that feeds 350 children during the summer. The club has raised about $16,000 so far — it must reach a $40,000 goal to secure a new unit before repairs can no longer keep the cooler running.  County 17
  • Local organizers launch the annual Downtown Thursday Night Concert Series this week with live music downtown. The concerts will run through the summer and feature various performers—bringing lively entertainment for residents.  Gillette News Record

  • Gillette’s Plant Shack is celebrating 30 years in operation this year as owner Vickie Knutson and her family help the shop thrive despite tough Wyoming weather — loyal neighbors have kept the business growing from a small greenhouse to a popular plant center. CRIME NEWS

  • A 63-year-old Gillette man—James M. Alexander—was sentenced on June 17 to 12 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release for earning over $330,830 from remodeling work after a work injury while still receiving disability benefits, and he will pay over $409,422 in restitution and a $200 special charge with his sentence to begin Aug. 4.  County 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Wyoming recognized 72 Campbell County students on its Dean’s and Freshman Honor Roll lists for the spring semester. Among the honorees, 62 are from Gillette—four from Rozet and six from Wright.  County 17
  • Gillette College trustees are considering bond financing to cover expenses for building the new Enzi Center, the latest campus project; the board will review this option as plans progress (further details expected).  Gillette News Record

  • Gillette will see a series of thunderstorms today starting after 2 p.m.—some may be severe—with mostly sunny skies and a high near 74. Storms will continue into tonight with a 60% chance of rain and gusts up to 20 mph, and Wednesday will bring a slight chance of showers with a high near 77.  County 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Members of the Joint Appropriation Committee spent nearly seven hours Monday reviewing Wyoming’s firefighting management, preparation and funding as Rep. John Bear of Gillette outlined priorities and noted that more time may be needed for a full review — lawmakers and state officials discussed challenges with recruitment, cost-sharing, and potential seasonal firefighter positions with a follow-up meeting scheduled for August 18.  Wyoming Public Media
