CRIME NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wyoming’s new law ends most gun-free zones in schools effective July 1, and districts such as Campbell and Teton are updating safety policies—adding training and storage rules for concealed carry—while some local officials warn that the changes reduce local control over school safety.  County 17
  • The Campbell County Public Library will host its Summer Reading kick-off parties on Thursday+ marking the end of the school year and inviting local students and residents to start summer reading programs.  Gillette News Record
  • Last week, students from four elementary schools in the Campbell County School District raised and released rainbow trout at Dalbey Memorial Park—marking the final step of a semester-long project—and then set the fish free into Fishing Lake.  Gillette News Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During Tuesday's meeting, Campbell County commissioners approved grant applications from the sheriff’s office and the Rockpile Museum. The sheriff’s office seeks $18,589.89 for a grant period from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 to boost impaired driving enforcement—while the museum requests $2,500 with a local match of $863.04 for a summer employee.  County 17
  • Gillette City Council held two special meetings last week and is one step closer to adopting a proposed $151 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Officials will meet again—likely next week—to finalize the budget.  Gillette News Record
  • City rules now allow recreational vehicles & trailers to be parked next to property owned or occupied by the owner from May 1 through Oct 31; vehicles parked elsewhere may be towed with fines up to $200, and parking is not allowed from Nov 1 through April 30.  County 17
  • On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Campbell County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution for revenue bonds by the South Dakota Health and Educational Facilities Authority for Sanford after a public hearing during the regular meeting. Ronni Martin of Chapman and Cutler LLP presented the proposal with Amy Cobb Curran and Sanford representative Becky Lamprecht, and the county acted only as a middleman while the local portion of the bonds was capped at $15,000,000.  County 17
  • On Tuesday, Campbell County commissioners heard a proposal from Wyoming Horse Racing LLC to open a new off-track betting facility on Skyline Drive — the plan calls for a $2.3 million investment with three to four months of construction and the proposal will be discussed further at the June 20 meeting.  County 17
