  • The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Powder River Chapter will host a banquet on Friday, May 30th with doors opening at 5:00 p.m. at Camplex Frontier Hall in Gillette to support local conservation through dinner & drinks, live & silent auctions, raffles & games that strengthen efforts to preserve elk habitat.  County 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Peabody Energy earned $34.4 million and sold 28.9 million tons of coal for over $937 million in Q1 2025—showing strong performance in U.S. coal demand. The company said it is sold out for planned Powder River Basin production this year—expecting lower coal demand in Q2 due to shoulder season effects.  County 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 10, Chadron State College awarded bachelor's and master's degrees to 245 and 65 candidates respectively, with Gillette graduates—Taylor Burch, Jaden Earle, Breckyn Hamlin, Dalton Holst, Sydney Hunter, Audrey Lubken and Scott O'Dell—earning honors for meeting GPA requirements.  County 17
  • The Campbell County School District board approved a $3,500 increase in base pay for teachers—other district employees also received pay raises during the meeting.  Gillette News Record

  • A federal judge in West Virginia issued a temporary injunction to block the firing of 25 employees at the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program as a lawsuit moves forward. The decision preserves the data collection at Wyoming’s only black lung clinic (the clinic director said the information helps show coal miners that black lung is still a threat).  Wyoming Public Media
  • Lt. Col. Carl Barrios was appointed as the new inspector general of the Wyoming National Guard at a ceremony in Cheyenne on April 30th, and he brings over 20 years of service experience in missile operations and training—his role includes overseeing complaints, inquiries, and inspections to support service members.  County 17

  • Grocery stores in Gillette will set up rainbow-themed displays on May 21 to support Eat More Fruits and Veggies Day. The campaign urges shoppers to choose colorful fresh produce—part of a nationwide effort to promote balanced diets and sustainable eating habits.  Wyoming News Now
