EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sunflower Elementary principal Troy Claycomb—retiring after 13 reports—presented his final academic report on Tuesday, March 11th to the Campbell County School District Board of Trustees. He noted stable enrollment and a strong student culture as key parts of the school’s progress.  County 17
  • Wagonwheel Elementary School Principal Brandee Maurer presented a report to the school board that showed students making strong gains in state tests and overall academic progress. The report stated every grade improved in English Language Arts—fourth through sixth grades scored above the state average while the school maintained steady enrollment and staffing.  County 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A University of Wyoming study released on March 14th, 2025 finds many locals oppose storing spent nuclear fuel in the state and would pay about $41 to avoid it, with nearly 40% of respondents strongly against the idea. The study shows that while a storage industry could bring 1,900 construction jobs and more economic benefits, Wyoming law does not allow such storage and the issue may be debated again in future legislative sessions — a subject that challenges local views on safety and community values.  Wyoming Public Media

  • Gov. Mark Gordon ordered the U.S. and Wyoming flags to fly at half-staff as the state mourns former U.S. Sen. Al Simpson, who died today in Cody—flags will stay half-staff until sundown on the day of his interment and further instructions will follow when a date is set.  County 17
  • Oil and gas leaders praise the new law that creates an account for operators to pool resources to meet bonding requirements—smaller operators will have an easier time managing strict financial rules.  Gillette News Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Campbell County High School boys from Gillette beat Sheridan 51-47 in the semifinal game at (Ford Wyoming Center) on Friday night. They will face Laramie at 7 p.m. today (March 15th) in the championship game.  County 17
  • The Gillette College Pronghorns men’s basketball team hosted the Region IX tournament and won its first round game — eight teams from Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska competed this weekend.  Gillette News Record
