CULTURE NEWS

  • 11-year-old Touren Pope discovered a nearly complete turtle fossil dating nearly 48 million years old on public lands while rockhounding with his grandparents last fall and reported it to BLM. BLM paleontologist JP Cavigelli then carefully excavated and moved the fossil (named Little Timmy) to a museum for study and future display.  County 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Campbell County School District Board approved a three-year $500K IXL contract and a new tech plan that upgrades classroom digital tools (including single sign-on and scheduled device replacement) while reviewing projects like the high school redesign and Hillcrest property sale.  County 17
  • The Campbell County School District Board met today to review academic reports from Paintbrush and Prairie Wind elementary schools. Paintbrush noted improved English language arts scores and kindergarten enrollment while Prairie Wind reported gains and sixth-grader won the Semiquincentennial art contest (featuring a buffalo) for America’s 250th birthday celebrations.  County 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mark Gordon urged lawmakers to continue funding the Wyoming Business Council by trimming its biennial budget request to ($54.6 million) and calling for reforms amid debates on the agency’s economic role. The final budget decision will be made in February.  County 17
  • The Wyoming Game and Fish Department announced fishing regulations that take effect this year, requiring single-point, barbless hooks on North Platte River sections and expanding limits in the Jackson Region — with a Gray Reef spawning closure from April 1 to May 15 — while guides must register their boats.  County 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Campbell County Fire Department warns Gillette residents about radon, an odorless gas that seeps through home cracks and increases lung cancer risk, especially for smokers. Residents should use EPA-approved test kits (or hire certified professionals) to check levels and take action if necessary.  County 17
